Dragon Born Empty Re: Dragon Born

Post by hatman17 Tue Aug 05, 2014 11:44 pm

The mountains were in top form that morning, glistening with dew and positively radiant in the dawn light. Purple, red, and pink colored the clouds, birds chirped their songs, mountain goats began to search for new grazing sites, and a mysterious portal fluxed into existence atop a mountain ridge.
It was a shimmering patch of air, visible only as a haze distorting the land through it. it made no noise, emanated no radiation, and animals did not fear it or notice it to any great extent. All of a sudden, a metal sphere much like a over-sized ball bearing shot out of the portal, ricocheting off a rock and bouncing off into a stand of trees where it spooked two squirrels.
A few minutes passed. The portal shifted shape a little, but that was it.
Another ball bearing shot up the top of the portal high into the air before arcing back down into the portal. Another minute passed and a final ball sphere appeared in the portal and gently fell in front of it. At which point, several whitish-grey crates fell out of the portal and tumbled down the gentle slope until they were stopped by the aforementioned trees. The squirrels became upset once more.
A short time after that, a man fell out of the portal and also began to tumble down the slope, having been taken by surprise. A black tentacle shot off his forearm and grabbed a bunch of grass, stopping him before he could follow the crates down. He staggered, pinwheeling his other arm until he regained his balance, then re-absorbed the tentacle into his body. He turned to the portal and spoke briefly into a crystalline communicator, before nodding in confirmation and tossing it back into the portal.
It dissolved into nothingness, and the man was alone on the mountain.
*******
"Crap, lost one," muttered Syjac to himself. He was checking the crates against a manifest that he'd drawn up on his arm. He could memorize anything so long as he'd first taken the time to doodle it onto his skin, and had re-created the tattoo perfectly. 'I mean, it was a heavy laser, a couple drones, and some other clothes, nothing too important, but still," he thought. It was always annoying when crates got lost in transit. They'd pop up eventually in the nets, and were tagged so that they'd be reclaimed and sent on their way asap, but that wasn't helping him any.
Syjac stood and gestured to the remaining crates. Their sensors picked up his typing fingers and opened up to vomit up the requested objects. Syjac waited patiently as spindly arms packed and folded clothes, food, water, and temporary shelter into a duffel pack, all of it pre-stained and weathered to imply heavy use. His own outfit bespoke the same; mud-spattered boots, worn loose-fit jeans, and a heavy sweater to ward off the mountain chill, threads coming off where it had supposedly been snagged. He was the picture of the well-prepared but weary recreational hiker, an image he hoped wouldn't arouse suspicion where he was going.
The crates finished packing parts of themselves into the duffel pack, hiding a few weapons into secret pockets before waiting patiently (as machines do) for further commands. Syjac checked it all before nodding and gesturing a command for them to go invisible and retreat to a checkpoint already established. They immediately disappeared and began the long process of hovering slowly to the site.
Syjac looked around, then quickly shucked off the sweater, revealing the lean and toned body underneath. He wore no other top besides the sweater, the better to strip quickly and use his abilities to the fullest. They weren't obvious, stemming from a cracked ice tattoo covering his left shoulder and twisting black tendrils of ink decorating his right forearm and hand.
Nonetheless, there was a reason Syjac was trusted to scout unfamiliar dimensions alone.
He stretched and flexed in the dawn light, perfectly comfortable in the chill. He did a few short yoga exercises then put the sweater back on and strapped on the pack. Syjac then smiled and began to walk down towards the tree line where he hoped to find a goat trail that would lead him in the direction of the village. He'd made the portal drop him off several miles away from the target, in order to not suddenly appear within any sentry line the village may have set up and to maintain the image of a vacationing hiker looking for a roof to sleep under rather than settle for an open-air sleeping bag again.
It was also good exercise, and early morning was always the best time for a brisk hike in his opinion, especially on a mountain of this beauty.

The sun slowly started its ascent across the sky. As it first peaked over the horizon Ashini was dragged from her slumber. She sat up, her eyes blurry with sleep. She made a few swipes at her choppy white hair in an attempt to tame it. Then she rubbed at her face, pinching the apples to bring some color to them. With a sleepy sigh, she looked to her nightstand.
She let out a short screech then slapped a hand over her mouth. She refused to make noise this early in the morning and alert the others in the village that she was awake. That would ruin her plan. They might see her as responsible. If they did that she would have to marry her...fiance. Ashini shuddered at the thought. Her fiance was a young thunder dragon from a neighboring village. His name was Kade, and he was a boisterous and obnoxious moron. Sadly, all because she controlled lightning and he thunder, their parents had arranged for their marriage at birth. They figured that if their powers were compatible then they could mate and bring the two villages together. Ashini sighed. Her only defense against his advances was to act like a ditz. That way her village matriarch would not yet relinquish her power.
Ashini shook her head in an attempt to clear it from such negative thoughts. She once again looked to her bedside table and picked up the object of her excitement. A tattered and torn copy of Hamlet. Ashini quickly flipped to her bookmarked page. It was the scene where Polonius sends Reynaldo to spy on Laertes in Paris. Ashini became completely engrossed in Shakespeare's world. She treasured the moments that she could spend in the 'human world'. She was banned from leaving her village. Her unnaturally green eyes and the slight shimmer of her skin would automatically alert any human that she was different. And when one is different from humans they end up dead.
Time began to elapse as the pages turned faster and faster. Too soon it seemed that Ashini met the end of the play. With a content smile on her lips, she peered at her clock. It read 11:48 am.
"All right! I suppose it is late enough that I can finally leave the house." She quickly hopped from the bed and ran to her closet. She began rifling through all of her choices. She settled for a neon pink tank top and a black tutu skirt. Belatedly, she pulled on thigh high white socks with pink stripes and a worn pair of orange converse. Ashini then walked to the bathroom. She examined her reflection in the mirror. Her tiny scales were glimmering under the light and her eyes glowed a neon green color. She took a brush and ran it through her choppy hair. She made sure the strategically place the single blonde stripe in her all white hair to frame the left side of her face. Ashini then slapped on some pink lip gloss, mascara, and a bunny sticker on her right cheek. When she reflected on her appearance, she was disappointed. She wasn't this person but she had to act like it. She could say that she looked cute, in a little girl kind of way.
"I am 183 years old and still dressing like a toddler. The things I will do for," at this point she looked toward the ceiling, clasped her hands together, and batted her eyelashes, "LOVE" She laughed at herself and made her way to the front door.
After a deep breath she opened the door. She skipped out of her house and down the road toward the matriarch's house. She was supposed to report to her each morning. And so she reported each afternoon. As she skipped down the street she waved to everyone and even stopped to stare at a cat. She giggled as it licked its paw and then continued on her way. All the while she thought that she would probably win the award for town idiot...again.

Syjac peered through the trees at the village, analyzing every resident he saw. They didn't seem all that strange, no obvious disfigurations or markings, nothing ritualistic about their clothes or mannerisms. and yet...
His trained eye saw a faint something on their skin. He was too far away to make out what, but he was sure of it. Perhaps this was the reason they'd chosen such a remote location to make their home? Pariahs due to a mere skin condition?
Syjac pondered it for a moment, then decided against. The Watchers had seen some sort of nexus about this place, some sort of energy and karmaic turmoil. A rash wouldn't, couldn't, be the reason he'd been given this mission. He needed to find out what it was that made this place so cosmically interesting, and who in particular the Watchers had focused on.
******
Syjac walked into the village with a broad smile, looking left and right and occasionally stopping to admire some part of the typical peasant's cottages. They were picturesque, but that was far from the reason he was there. He came across a trio of villagers, two men and a woman and waved at them, cutting across the road to greet them.
"Hello! My name is Syrion," he said cheerfully at the suspicious villagers. "I have been hiking for two weeks now, just admiring your beautiful country, and I was wondering if there was a hotel in this town I could rent a room at? The open air is fine, but it gets old after a while."

Ashini suddenly stopped on her way to the matriarch's cottage. Her nose lifted to the wind and she caught a strange scent. Her eyes widened, it smelled almost like livestock. But it was different from anything she had ever smelt. It could only be one thing! She took off like a bullet, attempting to reach the matriarch quickly. She arrived at he humble door and let herself in.
"Human! I smelt a human!!!" Ashini had barged in on a meeting of the elders. All 5 faces turned to stare at her. After a second the room was a flurry of activity. All of the elders were suddenly on their feet and it was chaos. A human had never wandered this close to their village. There was magic that surrounded this place that repelled humans.
The village's matriarch, Shima, looked at Ashini and beckoned her closer. Ashini dashed to her side. She had to dip and dodge around the other's to make it to her leader's side.
"Ashini, tell me exactly what happened." Shima demanded.
"I was skipping through town on my way here. I stopped to play with a cat and then the wind carried in new scents. So of course I stopped to sniff. There was a smell. It smelt like salt and flesh and it was very animal. But nothing like the meat we eat. It was not livestock. I think it was human."
"But you aren't positive?"
"Well no. I have never actually smelt a human so I can't be sure." Ashini stated as the doors once again bust open. Timi, Virgil, and Cadence staggered through the door and slammed it shut. They were three of of warriors and were meant to be stationed near the border. All three tried to speak at once until Shima silenced them. She pointed to Cadence.
"There was a traveler. He walked right up to us. A human!" Cadence said as she tried to breathe.
"Well it looks like we have some company. Ashini, take care of it." Shima ordered and began to walk away.
"Take care of it? Like...kill him?" Ashini's eyes widened. She had only ever hunted animals with her power. She had never needed to fight.
"Yes. Our secret can't get out."
"But..."
"GO!" Shima turned and ordered. Ashini saw the fire in her eyes. She was close to unleashing her fire magic on Ashini herself.
Ashini replied with a heavy heart, "Yes Mother."

The three villagers had all run off in a hurry. Shit, Syjac thought, They must be more concerned about outsiders than we predicted. If they were willing to actually run off and raise his own suspicions about the place, they were probably not going to be too friendly about keeping their secret, whatever-it-was.
Change of plans, leave the village and observe them from afar. Syjac turned back the way he'd come, one hand resting on the concealed pistol on the side of his pack. His powers would be more than enough to use in a fight, but better to use conventional weaponry and not reveal himself as-
He stopped. Standing in front of him was a... what was he looking at. She was a woman, that was for sure, but she was dressed like a scene kid from the 90's. She had the same skin thing as the other villagers, but her eyes were a vibrant, glowing neon green. It's like the color of Omnis, could they be Blades of some sort? Why would they be in a village? Syjac decided to try subterfuge again.
"Hello!" he called out, raising his hand in a wave, smiled foolishly. "I was talking to some other folk but they ran off before directing me to a hotel? Do you not like strangers? I'd keep walking but," at this he took a leap of faith, "I lost my glasses on the trail. Can't see too well up close, and I wanna regain my strength before descending the mountain again in this state." Hopefully if the skin disorder was key, they'd think he wouldn't be a threat if he couldn't see it.
As he felt more and more pairs of eyes focusing on him, Syjac was reminded on how foolish it was to rely on hope.

Ashini was staring at what she figured was a human. She was awe-struck. He looked like her people minus the glimmering skin and the bright eyes. He didn't look like a threat either. He even greeted her sweetly. She didn't want to hurt him, but she could feel the eyes of her people on her. She had to fight and win. Despite first impressions, years of violence against her kind was enough to warrant caution.
She giggled at the man in front of her. She still had to keep up her act no matter what happened. Plus, he would be more likely to trust a ditsy character. She even rocked back and forth on her feet with her hands behind her back. Heel. Toe. Heel. Toe. She was the vision of childish innocence.
"I'm sorry if they were rude to you. We just don't get a lot of visitors in these parts. And sadly we have no hotels, but I'm willing to take you to the nearest village. It's just down the mountain." She was to lure him away then kill him.
Ashini rushed forward and clasped his hand in her own. He was warm. She smiled up at his confused face and began to drag him away from the village. She couldn't skip while holding his hand so she did the next best thing. Bounce. She added an extra spring to her step and childish exuberance to her actions.
"So where are you from? What do you do? What's your name? Do you like cats? Am I annoying you?" Ashini barraged the man with questions to hopefully distract him. She felt bad that she would be the last face he saw. She knew that her facade was a bit much to deal with.

"Uhhh," stalled Syjac. This was unexpected. He was waiting for the shoe to drop, for the villagers to rush him when the... ditzing started. "In order, village at the base of the mountain, tattoo artist," might as well put in some truth into the lies, "Syrion Jacobin, not really, aaannnddd not really."
The girl kept up her boundless energy, even when they got into the woods. It was unnerving, the way the clearly grown woman acted like a five year old. She dressed so infantile, like a parody of herself. Like a....
Like a distraction.
Syjac's eyes widened. She wasn't bringing him to the nearest village, she was protecting hers. And why do it in the middle of the street, where all could see her. She wanted a little privacy, and he'd been kind enough to give it to her. God dammit, he had to keep his gourd up around pretty faces more.
He stopped suddenly, letting the bag slip from his shoulders. She turned to face him quizzically, but he just glared back. "Listen, cut the crap will ya? I admit, the disguise worked to get me out here, but no one's this cheerful in the middle of the woods."
He took a step towards her. "If you are going to kill me, I invite you to try. I don't want to hurt you, that's the opposite of what I want, but stop the game. Get it over with."

Ashini was surprised as the man that called himself Syrion dropped his pack. He had seen through her facade. A facade that had kept her out of marriage for 183 years and he saw through it in 5 minutes.
"Well if I am being honest, I am quite impressed." She dropped her act. Ashini figured that he would be dead soon, so he could glimpse upon her actual self. It might make both feel better. Her to be able to act normal. And him because he wouldn't be murdered by an imbecile.
"You saw through a ruse that 378 dragons have yet to identify. You are quite sharp. It really is a shame that I have to kill you, but orders are orders." Ashini lengthened her already pointed teeth, sharpened her claws, and felt her skin charge with electrical energy. The pupils of her eyes narrowed to slits as she stared down her opponent.
"Any last words Human, before I strike you down?" Ashini raised her hand to the sky and called down and viscous strike of lightning. It hit a tree to the right of Syjac and the foliage was ablaze. She hoped to instill fear. She didn't want an all out brawl, she wanted this to be over and done with. Sadly, one does not always get what they wish for.

DRAGONS? What the FUCK?! The villager dropped her facade and shifted, teeth and claws lengthening. This must be the cause of the readings, an entire clan of dragons would cert-
She raised her hand and suddenly a tree to his right exploded in a flash of lightning. Right, under attack. Syjac glanced at the remnants of the tree, flaming branches tumbling down. He shifted his gaze back to the girl. She'd given him final words. Well then.
"Oh, I have a few," quipped Syjac, smiling exaggeratedly, "Let's start with: I'm not that human."
Without warning his Ink shifted underneath his clothing, shattered ice growing and covering his skin, leaving the joints loose but hardening into armor elsewhere. They shifted further, letting black tendrils move past two dimensional moving ink and resolve themselves into 3 dimensional coils of sinewy tentacles. Syjac threw his arms out, letting the tentacles shoot out. One hand aimed them at a strong tree limb 20 feet up, the other at the villager's legs.
As quickly as her own flash of lightning, the Ink had wrapped around her legs. Syjac pulled in both arms, flexing the tendril and pulling him up into the air. Both tentacles arced gracefully and powerfully, causing her to get yanked off her feet and whiplashed into a tree.
Syjac grabbed the limb gracefully, flipping up perfectly and letting smaller tentacles shoot off his calves and anchor him to the branch as he observed how she would react

That bastard slammed me into a tree! Ashini thought as she felt her body make contact with the giant's bark. Her back bent around its trunk and she felt her head snap backward. She fell to the ground in a heap. Her body had not ever taken a beating like this. Her people did not encourage fighting and thusly she was not used to the physical aspect. She normally was able to just hit something with a bolt and fry it.
"That really hurt!" Ashini exclaimed, "What are you?"
She didn't expect an answer from her opponent. Ashini did her best to continue on the fight. Her scales had mostly protected her from any serious harm. The had hardened like a shield around her. As she stood she noticed her socks were in shambles and her tutu was torn. She thought that he was a measly human. That the most her would have would be guns, but he was anything but measly. He grew tentacles! The man was also quick on his feet. Ashini decided she would just have to be quicker.
Considering that he had rooted himself to the tree, she would just have to match his level. She quickly sprouted wings of violet from her back and took to the sky. She then aimed a strike of lightning straight for his head.

Jesus shit, WINGS?! Syjac barely had time to raise an armored fist before the lightning bolt shocked him. The Ink managed to course most of it through his body and down into the tree where his anchoring tattoos acted as fortuitous grounding wires, but he cried out in pain from the electric shock nonetheless.
Unfortunately, the branch exploded from the electricity he'd redirected, driving deep splinters into his skin where the shattered ice Ink hadn't covered. He fell down, landing badly on the ground. Syjac got back up on his feet and shook his head. He'd had worse.
The dragon was circling back, raising a hand to call in another lightning strike. That won't work twice. Part of his left sleeve had burned off, and Syjac twirled his fingers to loosen the ice tattoos and allow a multitude of tentacles to spring out. He spun to gather momentum and they shot out, growing to immense size almost instantly. The tips became white and cracked as the ice Ink that was his armor appeared, making the giant flail hard and sharp where it whipped at the dragon.

Ashini circled above her victim. He had fallen to the ground as the branch gave way to her lightning attack. She was going to call down another strike and end this fight once and for all. As she pointed at her intended target a tentacle with hardened ice at the end made its way toward her hovering form. It had the appearance of a flail. Ashini tried to fly higher to avoid its strike, but she miscalculated the wind and was unable to move. The flail met its target and gouged into her thigh.
Ashini tumbled from the sky with a shriek of pain. The flail had found its way under her scales and into the soft skin beneath. She struggled to stay airborne but could not get control of her body. She hit the earth with a thud.
Luckily she had enough instinct to roll as soon as she landed. She tucked her wings back into her body and felt her body stop its descent down the hill side as she made contact with bushes. Suddenly, a plan formed in her head. She sent a charge from her skin into the bushes to set them ablaze. She then tore its roots from the ground and chucked the flaming bush at her opponent.
That should distract him long enough that I can torch his ass Ashini then prepared to call down lightning to smite this...well she didn't know what he was.

Syjac let the burning bush crash into him, allowing the ice Ink to protect him before wiping it off with a tentacle. He stripped off the sweater and started walking where he thought the dragon had crashed.
"Oh Ms. Targaryen!" he called out, "Fire can't kill the dragon and it isn't that big a problem for me either!" He felt bad about the flail, he'd glimpsed blood and scouting was supposed to be a peaceful endeavor. This was all going to ruin diplomatic talks in the future, especially if the Guardians wanted their help at some point. He had to turn this around.
"Listen," he shouted at the trees, not knowing where she'd gone. "I don't want to hurt you, I'm sorry that i already have. that's not why I'm here. I mean you no harm, but I needed to defend myself. Hear me out-"
All of a sudden he felt the tingling in the air that preceded a lightning strike, and whipped a tentacle at the closest tree to try and ground himself. It was still a foot away when the strike got him.

The man tried to reach out a tentacle to ground himself before the strike hit. But about a foot from the tree, Ashini's weapon hit its mark. Syjac collapsed in a fit of spasms. The lightning left his skin charred and him unconscious. Ashini approached cautiously. She didn't want to take any chances with this warrior. His powers were unpredictable and he was definitely trained.
As Ashini made her way to the body she noticed that it was starting to ice over. She panicked and placed her hands on the man's body. She sent shock after shock into the shell in an attempt to finish her mission, but each failed. The ice was impenetrable. Ashini sat back with a sigh.
What am I going to do now. This man is a danger to our people. Especially now that he has seen my powers. Ashini was starting to grow worried. She couldn't leave the man here. He could thaw out and run to rally a mob. She also couldn't bring him back to the village. Although it would most definitely support her ruse, they would torture the poor soul. Her lightning kills fast, whereas their fire burns slow.
Ashini then recalled what the man had said. He didn't want to hurt me? This man was strange indeed. Ashini contemplated her options. She could leave him, bring him home, or wait till he wakes up to get some answers. The third option was the most promising it seemed. With her decision made Ashini unleashed her long tail. She wrapped it around the man's body as a makeshift rope. Ashini would wait there until her captive woke up.

Pain
Rule one of coming back into consciousness while in pain, don't give any indication that you are doing so. If you are hurt, somebody hurt you, and somebody may do so again.
Of course, it rankled that he'd gotten hurt in the first place, he was a Knight after all. But the electricity was one hell of a surprise.
He was bound. Covered in his ice Ink, which probably would have protected him from being killed in his sleep, but bound nonetheless. Not rope, not plastic ties, it felt organic...
Syjac cracked open one eye a slit to confirm. It was a tail. The dragon had grown a friggin' tail to hold him. She wasn't looking at him at the moment, but judging from the brightness of the day, he hadn't been unconscious that long. Any competent guard should still have been vigilant at that time. Which meant she wasn't trained. Which meant, they'd sent an amateur to kill him, or at least somebody whose job wasn't to kill people.
Perhaps diplomacy still could work. One could only hope.
He breathed deeply, then shrank the ice Ink back to his usual shoulder patch. When she noticed him awake, he looked into her eyes first. "So, I'm not dead. Care to explain?"

She jumped at the sound of his voice. She had been daydreaming. It happened to her often, she dreamed of a life where she was happy. Truly happy, not that happy that she portrayed. That was fake and vulgar. There were days, when she was very down on herself, that the bubbly happiness made her physically ill.
She snapped out of her pity party and looked over her shoulder. The man was still a bit crispy and she got a bit worried for him. He must be in awful pain. Ashini shook her head to clear it. She had to focus on the task at hand.
"Your ice wouldn't let me." She smiled at her little joke but saw him tense. Not the thing to say, "I'm kidding. Well not really but there is another reason. I want answers. I know the stuff you told me in the start was all bullshit. So spill it. Who are you and what do you want with my people?" Ashini used her most commanding voice and brought herself up to full height.
All she could think was I look just like my mother

Syjac glared at her, then relaxed. She hadn't attacked him yet, which meant she wanted to talk. And since talking is what he'd been sent to do, this was a good thing. "My name is Syrion Jacobin, and if we're gonna be honest, I'd like a good dose of not-dying from your people."
Seeing her startled expression, he continued. "Sorry for the flippancy, near-death does that to a guy. But if you really want answers, I'll give 'em to ya. Standard protocol says to wait until we're firmly on the same side, but eh, standard protocol usually thinks that the scout manages to make it a day before being at the mercy of some captor or another."
"Simply put, I work for some people who are extremely interested in knowing what's what in the world," Syjac wasn't giving her the full story, or even the complete truth of the part he was, but stan-col was adamant about saving both for much later in the game. Most tended to agree. "Our seers detected a lot of interesting energy about this place, and I was sent in to investigate. Looks like the karmaic watchamacallit is dragons of all things, neat. Now," he said looking up at her, "Obviously, that's not the whole truth. But it's give and take in the wide world, and I think I'm privy to a little info myself. Dragons. What's up with that?" Syjac finished with a cocky grin.
He could survive her. The superficial wounds had already changed into perfect tattoos of themselves, ready to be wiped away at his discretion. He kept them on so she would think to have the upper hand. He was a Knight of the Guardians, able to run solo missions and survive, one of the last Inkmen, and he'd fought worse and come of the better.
He didn't fear her. He wanted to know about her and her people, it was his job. And no tutu wearing scene chick would get in the way of that.

Dragon Born Empty Re: Dragon Born

He gave a vague answer as to who he was and what he was doing. Ashini was skeptical of this man. He was too confident and much too cocky. He was playing mind games with her and she didn't appreciate it. The only problem was that she didn't know his angle.
"Well you get is what you see. My people are descendants of dragons. We can take on attributes of our fair ancestors and each dragon descendant has control of an element. Mine of course is lightning." Ashini looked at his face and saw he wanted more. Considering he said this was give and take, she figured she had to give more to get more, "My village is a peaceful tribe. We don't like to cause trouble to anyone. We hunt our land and we avoid humanity. I am concerned that you are here to cause trouble for us though. That is why I was ordered to kill you. Are you here to cause trouble for my people? Because if you are I will not stand idly by. I will fight, judging from your skills I may not win, but I will fight with a clan at my back."
Ashini hoped this was enough to placate the man. She wanted him to know that she knew her limits, but she did not stand alone. She had her clan, and a clan of dragons hunting you down was not a position one wanted to be in. She unfurled her tail from around his figure and tucked it away. She was taking a risk but she had to show that diplomacy may work. She wanted it to work. This man intrigued her and her curiosity always seemed to get the better of her.
She stuck out her hand palm up as a sign of truce then brought it back to hover above her heart. It was her clan's symbol of greeting.
"My name is Ashini, but you may call me Ash." she giggled at her own pun, "Get it? Ash"

Syjac made a vague chopping hand motion across upper left arm, heart, and head. "My people don't really have a formal hand greeting, but let me just say, holy cow, that's an awesome clan. So much more refreshing than the other nonsense they tell me to investigate."
He winked, then tried to step around her to get at his bag. Ashini looked at him suspiciously. "Ugh, fine, my turn. The people I work for? We're in charge of killing the bad guys. And usually, weird energy signals from deep within the mountains spells suspicion, so that's where I come in. But if you're as peaceful as you say, then we have nothing to worry about, and I'll just check off the relevant boxes, and that clipboard of potential problems can be shelved."
"The problem is," winced Syjac dramatically, "I kinda need to make sure you're on the level here. I mean," at this he toed the remains of the sweater that he'd originally been wearing, "this thing's got some Kevlar weave in it, hard to rip, let alone burn half off. Now I get it, I've got the muscles and the punk-rock tattoo thing going on, but it's generally considered, mmmm, rude, to use lightning bolts to take my top off when you could've just asked nicely."
He turned to face her, Ink pulsing inside him, ready if she took his next words the wrong way. "So you understand my dilemma; I wanna trust you, it's my job to get all parties in bed with each other but," he smiled grimly, "How can I be sure that the mercy you're showing me now is typical, that you clan is as peaceful and secluded as you promise?"
"After all, Ash," he stressed her nickname, "I really didn't get that 'peaceful' a greeting."

As he continued his speech, Ashini looked down in embarrassment and guilt. He was right of course. They had reacted too strongly to the situation. But of course none of her people had come into contact with a human for over 250 years. How was she going to convince him that he was an abnormality.
"Look, Syrion, I am really sorry that I tried to kill you with no questions asked. I was ordered to do so by my matriarch. But please don't blame her. My people have not come into contact with an outsider in over a century. We are very protective of our secret. Too many horror stories about the humans killing anything different from them. I mean my people don't even learn fighting anymore. We are natural hunters but that is it. I promise."
Ashini looked at Syjac with pleading eyes, hoping he would understand. She didn't know how else she could convince him of their peaceful nature. Her people were not viscous. They were nothing like Kade's village of heathens. Her eyes glowed slightly with hate as she thought of Kade. His clan was run by a king and queen rather than a matriarch. Kade just happened to be the prince. His family stuck to the tradition of the human hunt. Granted, they only hunted on special occasions but she could sometimes hear the screams outside her window. That is why she had to postpone the wedding for as long as possible, because once she joined the family she would be expected to hunt as well.
Ashini then realized that she had been off in her own little world too long. She stuffed her anger back down and smiled at Syjac.

Syjac bit his lip. Humans were dicks to what they considered strange, he knew that first hand. He felt the memories of his youth start to climb up to his consciousness, and threw them back down with practiced ease. Fine then. Desperation could be a valid excuse for violence, depending on how deep the fear went.
"I believe you Ash. In my experience, humans do have a knack for violence, and they love to practice it on whatever isn't them. So I get that you attacked me, especially when I got through your warding." He winked, "Good job on those by the way, very subtle, I myself lost half a kilometer before noticing."
"However," and he paused there to change the conversation, "I still need to do my job. And that means making really frickin' sure that your people aren't secretly planning genocide, which from what I've seen, might not be too hard for you."
Syjac rolled his neck, making the charred skin vanish as he did so, smiling slightly at her shocked expression. "So, I can't go in, because y'all will kill me, sooo, time to not be me." He closed his eyes and concentrated. He'd been near enough to her to see that the skin disorder he'd seen was actually minuscule flesh-colored scales. Child's play for an Inkman of his caliber. The Ink flowed, and traced across his skin, shaping tiny scales and raising them ever so microscopically. At the end, he looked the same, save for the dragon skin he'd whipped up. "Hm," he pursed his lips. "Maybe a little more." His skin darkened slightly, hair turned black instead of his usual blonde, and his shattered ice and tentacles disappeared, replaced by watercolor koi fish dancing around tribal-esque bars and swirls. He then plunged the Ink into his eyes, making them glow a fluorescent orange, spreading black ink across the iris to make it a slit as a finishing touch.
"Ah, that'll do it," he grinned at Ashini. "What'dya think? Do I look like someone another clan would have sent to track a mysterious stranger who was immune to our wards?"
He walked over to his pack to take out different clothes, and to re-color it so that it would be unrecognizable. "More importantly, am I still pretty?"

Ashini watched in amazement as Syjac transformed before her eyes. His skin suddenly began to show the faint signs of scales and his eyes became a vibrant orange. Then his hair changed to black and his pupils became slits. It was amazing. This man, who had looked so human, was now a perfect replica of a dragon. Ashini was dumbfounded and found that she was staring with her mouth hanging open like a fish. She shook herself out of her trance and finally listened to what Syjac was saying.
She made a choking sound at his last question. Is he flirting with me?
"Well you certainly look like a dragon. You actually look like you are from the Eastern Mountain tribe. You now have the same skin coloration and your eyes are a perfect match for them. So I suggest you say that is where your from, because you will be asked." Ashini stood from the ground in one graceful motion and faced Syjac.
"You will also need a history lesson. Your people are primitive. They mostly keep to themselves and they don't have any technologies. My people are lacking in that area compared to some but the Eastern tribe has nothing. They are comparative to the humans...umm I think they are called Amish. They eat only raw meat and they always sleep in groups. My people know this and will only offer you uncooked meat to eat and they will offer you lodging with one of our own for the night. I can try my best to keep you close to me but considering you're male it may be hard. I am betrothed to another and my mother is protective of my contract."
Ashini began to walk in the direction of her village. She remembered that there was one more important thing.
"Also, once we enter town I will be a different person. That idiot that led you out into the woods was not a distraction. That is me. You have to treat me like I am an imbecile. If you don't then there will be consequences for me." With that Ashini turned her back to him and plastered a smile on her face. She then skipped off into the trees to return home.

Syjac cringed internally at the raw meat part. He was an opportunistic vegetarian, enjoying a non-meat diet when he could. He was trained to eat anything he could find on missions though, so he'd soldier through.
"Excellent. I always like it when a plan comes together," he said, pulling on hidden cords of his pack to make it shift shape slightly. The pack was now pseudo-boiled leather, as was his remaining clothing. He kept pace with her as she skipped through the forest. "Concerning the keep-me-close thing, tell them your gay-dar's ringing, I'll confirm and that'll help convince your mother that I'm no threat to your contract." Although the fact that she's under some form of contract is rather third world of them, he didn't say. And what is with that act?
They were coming back into the village before long, and Syjac could sense eyes on them. "Sorry about this," he muttered, before starting his own act.
"Is this yours?" he shouted in a rough accent, "I caught her electrocuting the human I was tracking, what kind of people are you? She killed him before I could question the man, my people want answers and I am determined to get them."

As they neared the village Syjac grabbed Ashini's arm roughly and marched her into the village. She could feel the eyes of her people watching their little show. She decided that the best way to play it was to be a weepy child. She put on her best front. She could feel crocodile tears roll down her face and she was trying vaguely to pull away from Syjac. As they entered the town, Cadence stepped forward to intercept them.
"Halt!" she commanded with a frown. Mother must have been harsh on her earlier for letting a human get in. But when she saw me her eyes softened, "Ash what is going on?"
"I-I was in the woods. And I w-was doing what M-Matriarch told me. A-And he just c-came up and dragged me back here." Ashini kept the tears flowing and even added a broken sob at the end for good measure.
Cadence looked to her capture then back at Ashini, "Who is he?"
Ashini shrugged, "He hasn't told me anything except that I'm an idiot and that the Eastern tribe is gonna be mad! The big meanie wouldn't even let me walk here on my own." At this she stuck her tongue out at Syjac.
That is when Shima showed her face. She was the vision of calm as always. She approached with a slow grace that Ashini had always hated.
"Ashini, what is going on and who is this man?" Her tone was harsh.
"I DON'T KNOW!!!!" Ashini wailed and then lightly zapped Syjac with her lightning to break his hold. She threw herself around her mothers legs and cried, "I did what you told me and then he jumped me. He was yelling and being mean and calling me names. He said that I had angered the Eastern tribe with my actions! But I was just doing what you said. I killed the human."
"You actually managed to do it? Hmm," Shima looked down at her daughter, "Then Ashini congratulations are in order. That was your test and you proved your worth. Although, you still need to work on your attitude I think that it is time that you enter your last stages of training. We will send word to Kade in the morning. The wedding will take place at his earliest convinence."
With these words, Ashini's fake tears turned to real sobs. My life is over
