In a world where aliens have begun to colonize Earth, four unsuspecting lives clash in a tug o' war of ethics. Can they survive the fight for freedom, independence, and dragons? The world will just have to wait and see...

The Night The Darkness Descended Empty Re: The Night The Darkness Descended

This galaxy isn’t safe. I envy those planets still naive enough to think that other forms of life our so unattainable that it won’t affect them and I pity Earth, for we took that one thing away from them too early. My father needed another stronghold. Void, my people needed another one if we’re to continue on in this galaxy. The Arlassan needed the resources anyway. Earth was a perfect choice for both problems, except we’d overestimated the reasonability of humans and underestimated our own arrogance. In a way I can’t even blame them for firing the first shots in the twelve day war. They were only defending what was theirs. Yet, we were the ones trying to be peaceful when we first arrived.
I was sixteen when I first landed on the wartorn planet, amazed that our opponents had lasted as long as they had. My training had prepared me for killing people, whether it be firing a shot from a distance where they couldn’t even see me or slicing my way through the front lines with the tenacity of an legendary warrior. I’d already seen the horrors of war on my home planet. Humans were fragile too. Their soldiers’ had bones that could break just from someone stepping on them and their skin cut so easily, they didn’t scream unless you missed. They were just soldiers, meant to die defending their home planet.
Then that order came.
I remember wanting to ask for clarification, needing to ask for it. The Vauddor were known for precision in war, not brutality, not murdering innocent bystanders whose only crime was living in the area. Suddenly this war felt more like a slaughter. Whole families were butchered, some by my hand. I fought through tears as I tried to make it as painless as possible, but some captains were taking too much glee in this. Great Spirit, that last night broke me. The last thing I remember of Earth was being dragged away from the burning mass grave, the once blue sky red with the anger of the Great Spirit at what we’d done. My commanding officer had found out I’d let those children escape. No one defies a command.
We won Earth. I don’t know if that was for the better or the worse though, this is my first time leaving that white room.

It wasn't supposed to be like this. We were supposed to go in, collect resources, and get out. Simple, peaceful. It wasn't supposed to be like this…

Our shuttle pilot told us that we were going to be dropped in a secure area before being given orders. Some of the soldiers beside me began to whisper nervously, tails twitching with anxiety. A cold wave of fear washed through my body. I wasn't ready for this. My mind raced with oppressing thoughts of fear. How could anyone be ready for this?

A soldier sitting across from me kicked my foot gently. I looked up from where I was staring at my hand to see their bright orange eyes peering out from above their face covering, mesmerizing me, giving me something to focus on. I wasn't alone. The soldier signed You’ll be okay. I wanted to believe it, wanted to believe that we were all going to be okay, so I nodded.

I didn't know we were going into a full active battle yet. I didn't know how long this planet had been fighting.

I didn't know the inhabitants of this planet could scream so loud. Everything was so loud… And everyone was dying.

I was killing.

I don't remember leaving the shuttle. I don't remember my orders. I don't know what happened, but the next thing I knew was that I was in the battlefield, covered in blood. Humans were screaming, Vauddor were screeching, and all around me the brutality of war showed its face.

This wasn't how it was supposed to be, and for the first time in my life, I screamed.

The Night The Darkness Descended Empty Re: The Night The Darkness Descended

Post by alyssa.carlene Sat Nov 21, 2015 4:51 pm

I sat still as stone, watching my apartment window from the crack in the closet door when the invasion happened. I was watching Let’s Make A Deal when the reporter from CNN cut in to report the breaking news. He said that aliens had made contact with us and were on their way to Earth. There was live footage of a large object plummeting toward Earth, they said it was the aliens. At first I didn’t believe them, I had never considered the existence of aliens before. But as the object came into focus I saw that it was a ship. My heart began to race and I quickly called my mother.
“Mom, are you watching?” I frantically said into the receiver.
“Yes, your father and I have been watching from the start. You need to stay in your apartment. Do you understand me, Katya? Do not go outside!”
“Yes Mom, I understand. I’m not going to leave any time soon,” I saw the news had switched live feeds to another shot. There was more than one ship, “There’s more. Mom, one is projected to land here! Are you seeing this?”
“Katya, you need to hide yourself. Get into your closet and stay there. Don’t let anyone in and don’t let anyone know you’re home. We don’t know what these things want with us.” Mom’s voice held an undertone of panic, but it was steady. She was trying to be brave for me.
“Yes Mom. I love you. Can you put Dad on?”
The phone emitted some rustling sounds as it was passed from my mom to my dad. Dad’s gruff Russian accent greeted me, “Katya?”
“Hi Daddy, I just wanted to say that I love you.”
“Don’t you be talking like a quitter. You’ll be fine. I believe in you my little devushka.”
Silent tears began to fall down my cheeks, staining my white blouse. “I love you Daddy,” I whispered into the receiver.
“I love you too. Now, hide.” The line went dead. It was the last time I heard either if their voices.
As the aliens touched down, I heard guns and tanks. My whole world shook as the battle ensued outside. As I watched the window, I saw the marching soldiers of the invading race. They were grotesque, seeing them turned my stomach and I fought to keep from vomiting.
Suddenly, the front door splintered from its frame and I choked down a scream. I hoped they wouldn’t find me, but they checked the closet first. Blood red eyed glared menacingly down at me and I finally shrieked in fear. The alien grabbed for me, but I scuttled back and grabbed for anything that could help me. I found a shoe and was prepared to chuck it when it leveled its gun at me. I instantly froze and dropped the shoe. It grabbed my arm roughly and dragged me from the closet.
The alien shoved me toward the couch and began a series of tests on me. It was to test my intelligence and talents. I didn’t really understand what was happening, but I immediately understood that I was doing something right. It hummed pleasantly as I answered about animals. After the testing was complete, it grabbed my arm again and walked me out my door for the last time. They took me that day, for what I wasn’t sure, but as I saw the slew of dead littering the street I knew I was one of the lucky ones.
I cried silently as I was paraded to their ship.

The Night The Darkness Descended Empty Re: The Night The Darkness Descended

Post by MC1R//-mutant Tue Nov 24, 2015 9:03 pm

Rumble.

The walls of my classroom shook. My head shot up from the desk; the droning of the lesson was silenced by an uneasy sense of dread.

Rumble.

The sky began to darken. Strange shapes obscured the sun. What seemed to be black ships were etched in the midday sky.

Rumble.

My professor shouted for everyone to get under their desks. The students around me disappeared out of sight. I dropped to the ground and slid under my desk. My sweating palms were pressed against the cold floor.

RUMBLE.

The desk smashed into my back, sending a jolting pain through my body. I couldn't wait here. I wasn't going to a be the good girl waiting patiently for Death to answer his door. I jumped to my feet. The floor shook again. I regained my footing and began to run as the tile cracked and parted; threatening to split the floor open. I hit into the door and pulled it open. I looked back at my classmates. My friends. People whom all held a small piece of me. Friends I could never imagine living without.

RUMBLE.

The building shook viciously once again. I tore my eyes away from them and ran. The hallways seemed to melt into a blur. I kept running. Through the doors of the building, past the campus crumbling around me, away from the blinding flashes of light. Away from the screams. So many blood-curdling screams. I didn't stop. My lungs gasped for air and my legs burned, but I didn't feel safe. I couldn't stop. I slipped off the main roads, leaving the familiar world behind. I trusted the ceiling of the forest as my guardian angel; sheltering me from the eyes of this new monster. I reached an overlook, one which was hidden by the trees. I finally stopped. Warm tears rolled down my cheeks as I saw the places and people I loved burning. They were being destroyed, and I left them. I dropped to me knees, the dirt caking to my jeans, and I cried. I didn't know what had happened, but I knew that I would never forget that moment. That look of terror in my classmate's eyes. The tremors shattering the room and breaking my heart. Whoever was responsible for this was going to feel my pain. If possible, I would make them shed every tear that I did. I lost my whole world that day, now they are going to loose theirs.

The Night The Darkness Descended Empty Re: The Night The Darkness Descended

Three Years Later

He’d been demoted to guard. Just a temporary position, according to his father, until you’re at your best again. Rayder felt he would never be at his best again. Nothing felt right anymore. If he didn’t ache from wounds he could never talk about, his mind just kept going back to all the horrors he’d endured. There were moments when it took all his strength not to just break down in the street. Standing among the refugees and the lost though, being looked at like he was some demon sent to torment them was a constant reminder of what he and his people were though. They were monsters. Monsters didn’t care for anyone else but themselves, so why should he care for humanity? It hadn’t done him any good before. He pitied the little arlassan who was sprinting through this camp, trying to help these rebellious idiots who didn’t know what their cries of freedom would wrought. Did he not know his efforts were for nothing? Humanity was going to be crushed under the weight of the vauddor empire and there wasn’t anything anyone could do.

The Night The Darkness Descended Empty Re: The Night The Darkness Descended

There was so much injustice in this new world, he could hardly handle it.

Lyari stood in a small group of humans huddled around a fire in a rusty old barrel. Colder weather was on its way and these humans, these families, had nowhere to go. Shelters were little more than cloth and tarps hanging off of sticks and strings. They barely had enough clothes and blankets to keep themselves warm. Food rations were given out unequally-- the sick and the weak were left to starve unless someone was kind enough to share what little food they had. There were so many more injustices, as Lyari learned as he stood and listened as these people told the stories of the hardships they have faced due to the vauddor invasion.

These people were being forced into a cruel and brutal life in refugees camps all because of the vauddor decided to “ask for resources”, which turned into a full occupation of the planet and its people. It had been three years since the battle, and conditions were not getting any better. The humans had their home planet ripped away from their grasp. And Lyari was a part of that injustice. That fact both enraged and scared him. He saw the fear in the eyes of the refugees as he patrolled the camps. They knew that he was a killer of their kind, one of the enemy. Lyari tried his best to express how he was against the occupation through little speeches and small acts of kindness. He never truly wanted to be a part of this mess. He never wanted to be a part of the military. He wasn’t a fighter… well, that was a lie at that point. He never had the courage to fight before. Now, he had weapons, experience, anger, and a voice.

Lyari thanked the humans around the barrel for their stories and gestured a formal goodbye before turning and taking his leave. The sun was beginning to set on the horizon and he had to return to his post before someone noticed he had left to wander the camp (again). He felt the eyes of the refugees on his back as he walked between tents. He could practically feel the hate burning through his armor. He desperately wanted to explain to each and every one of them that he was not their enemy, that he was going to help them. By the Goddess, he was going to do his damn best to help them. He just needed a better plan. He needed something more than just listening and waiting, more than trying to stir morale that was nonexistent…

Lyari himself needed help.

Katya awoke from a dreamless sleep and stretched like a cat in her bed of hay. She was in the stables as usual, this being her decided place to spend the nights. She had been offered a small bedroom upon arrival at the base, but it was cold and damp constantly. She found the company of her friends in the stables more comforting anyhow.
She jumped up and looked from the loft upon the sleeping forms of her dragons. Well, her master's dragons, but they liked her better. She was kind and gentle with them. The masters were harsh to anything that wasn't of their race, space dragons included. A smile graced her mouth as she heard Anastasiya chuff a puff of smoke into the chilly morning air.
She gracefully climbed down the ladder, body lithe in the blue body wrap she wore daily. Katya whooped and roused the 4 dragons from their slumber. Their grumbling yawns and harrumphing made Katya giggle slightly, in spite of hearing every morning for three years. These dragons were her family now. The humans that were left were slaves to the race that invaded, but she had her freedom in the stables and when she exercised the dragons. That was when she could take to the skies.

Jamie threw the empty can in frustration. It skidded across the uneven stone "floor" of her makeshift house and rolled behind the two wooden bins underneath the hammock. It was the last damn can of food. There had been more patrols recently which made it difficult to go out and scavenge. Hence, the lack of food. The commotion startled a brown and grey Boxer mutt mix, who had been fast asleep on a pile of blankets against the far side wall. He let out a small growl then rolled back over. Jamie growled back at him, "Frankenstein P. Watson! Don't complain about being hungry." With a whimper the dog lowered his chin back into the worn blankets. Jamie shuffled over and sank down next to the large dog. With a sigh she ran her fingers through his fur, "Sorry for snapping. I'm hungry too, Frankie." Suddenly, a loud crash filled the silence. Jamie popped up quickly and hurried to the broken door of the small home, her companion followed closely at her heels. Through the dense treeline, Jamie could make out a growing pillar of smoke rising into the clear blue sky. "Looks like we may be able to scavenge something out of this one, buddy." Retreating back into the shack, she slipped a harness over Frankie's back, checking to make sure the pockets were empty and ready to be filled if needed. Jamie threw a few items in a pack of her own and quickly pulled on the backpack. Her fingers fell on her long sword. What the hell, might as well. After strapping the weapon to her side, Jamie and Frankie ducked out into the sun filled forest and snuck toward the billowing remains of the crash

Rayder didn’t even draw a weapon as the idiot human waved a gun in his face, raving about how unfair the new laws were but begging for him to enforce them on the child that stole his food. Humans weren’t supposed to have weapons. The moron wasn’t listening to him either, no matter how many times he asked for them to drop it and go back to their tent. At least there wasn’t a crowd to witness this. He felt the bones snap in the human’s wrist as he forced them to let go of the gun and then he proceeded to punch them just to make them stop screaming. He couldn’t stand screaming, not after three years of doing it himself.

The hit was a little too hard. Shit. He hoped no one had been spying, there’d be a riot otherwise. Slowly, he turned to the child shaking in the corner of the crumbling building but not letting go of the stolen rations. The punishment for theft was the loss of a hand. He couldn’t do that though, not to someone so small and defenseless. Children are going to be the death of me.

No one would know if he just dropped his lunch rations. They wouldn’t know he was defying orders again, not unless he was being watched. Besides, handing them back to his S.O. uneaten would just land him in that white room again. It wasn’t like he’d be skipping two meals because he’d handled the weapon situation by the book, so no one would know. He unhooked the pack conveniently concealed by the ridiculous cape all the guards had to wear, dropping it as he walked away.

As he left, he swore he saw a tail whip around the corner...

The Night The Darkness Descended Empty Re: The Night The Darkness Descended

Lyari hated the brutality against the humans. Everything could be handled so much better without throwing around threats and punches. No one has to get hurt all the time. No one has to be beaten for a stray glance. However, the brutality was the unfair reality of the humans. At least from the Vauddor, the brutes. Someone had to do something about it...

Lyari felt the urge to be that someone doing something when he heard the screams of a human in pain. He sped around the corner of a crumbling building to see a Vauddor guard punch a human into silence. Lyari felt enraged. With his teeth bared in a silent snarl, a hand hovering over one of his swords, Lyari began to sneak behind the Vauddor. However, the whimpers of a young human child stopped him in his tracks. In a dark corner, the child huddled, clutching onto a food ration. The child hadn’t noticed him yet, wide watery eyes too focused on the guard. Lyari was about to say something, or snarl, or whatever to get the guard’s attention away from the child, when the Vauddor reached behind his ridiculous and dramatic cape and pulled out… food. Food? What? Lyari quickly sped away from the scene, dashing around the corner from whence he appeared, skidding to a stop in the shadow of the building. He was confused. Lyari heard a soft thud and watched the Vauddor walk away. What the hell was that? The guard had left his own food behind and left the human child- most likely a thief- unharmed. Lyari could hardly believe his eyes. Carefully, he peeked around the corner again to see that both the child and the guard’s food ration gone. No blood… well, there was some from the adult human. But then Lyari noticed a gun. Illegal and dangerous in the hands of humans. Huh… Maybe this was the start of something- something that so desperately needed to happen. He hoped so. He walked away from the building, tail-tip flicking back and forth anxiously, moving quickly to finish his patrol on schedule.

He hoped to see that Vauddor again soon.
